The 18th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is here with us and as today. And to give you a gist of what you might see on the Day. We’ve got something to share exclusively with you, our loyal readers of Your No.1 News Journal.
Over the years, trends have always been aiding a couple of entertainments fans predict who wins this and who wins that and the African Artist of the Year is no exception.
Yes! if our memories serves us right, the eventual winner of the African Artist of the Year category is normally the African artist billed to perform on the event night. (There have however been occasions where two of the nominees in that category have been billed to perform).
Let’s get back into time and see how the trends work.
In 2012, Ice Prince who was a part of the performers on the night picked the award beating Naeto C, Duncan Mighty, D’banj, Angola’s Cabo Snoop, Wizkid and his then label mate, M.I.
In 2013, Wizkid performed at the event and was crowned the African Artist of the Year.
In 2014, Nigerian artist Davido was the toast of the country. He had released a number of hit singles including Aye and therefore winning the covetous African Artist of the Year was no surprise.
In 2015, Patoranking was among a list of performers including fellow Nigerian Yemi Alade billed to perform at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and oh yes, he won hands down.
Do I need to remind you of last year (2016)? Well, let me refresh your memory. It was all about the man who carries the new sound of Africa, Wizkid.
He undoubtedly was the biggest African artist on the continent and therefore performing on the night meant only one thing, an outright winner of the African Artist of the Year award.
Now, can you predict the winner of the African Artist of the Year at the upcoming 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards?
Runtown with his hit single Mad Over You remains the only international nominee billed to perform at the awards scheme which holds on April 8 2017.
Does this mean he automatically becomes the winner at this year’s VGMAs?
Well, I’m reliably informed organizers of the awards, Charterhouse tried to seek for the services of Mr. Eazi who I will bet my last penny on as rightfully deserving but could not arrive at a good deal. Moreover, the artist had already embarked on his #DettyWorld tour.
The question now is, who wins the African Artist of the Year? Could it be Runtown with the single hit, Mad Over You, Tekno with hit single Pana or Mr. Eazi with an almost unstoppable mixtape Accra to Lagos and playing a world tour already ?
Nominees for the African Artist of The Year in this year’s VGMAs include Runtown, Mr. Eazi, Patoranking, Tekno and Nathaniel Bassey.
